The Sports and PE Team

Sport and Physical Education are a vital part of our curriculum, promoting not only physical fitness but also mental health and wellbeing. Our Sports Team works closely with the SMSC Team to deliver a well-rounded wellbeing package for every child. Through a balance of competitive sports and skill-based activities, we encourage teamwork, resilience, and self-confidence. In Key Stage 2, children also develop essential life skills such as swimming and cycling, ensuring they are safe, capable, and active beyond school. By linking sport with wellbeing, we nurture healthy bodies and healthy minds, equipping pupils for a lifetime of positive choices.

The Sport & PE Curriculum
At St Elphin’s, we believe that PE should inspire every child to enjoy being active, build confidence, and develop lifelong healthy habits. Our curriculum is built around REAL PE, a programme that places the child at the heart of learning. REAL PE goes beyond traditional sport, focusing on the development of physical skills alongside teamwork, resilience, and personal confidence.
One of the key strengths of REAL PE is the way it supports ongoing assessment. Teachers are able to track not only physical progress, but also the wider skills that PE develops, such as perseverance, collaboration, and leadership. This ensures every pupil’s progress is recognised and celebrated, whether they are excelling in sport or growing in confidence through participation.
By offering a broad, inclusive, and well-structured curriculum, St Elphin’s makes sure that every child—whether a budding athlete or simply discovering the joy of movement—can experience success, enjoyment, and pride in their achievements.
Warrington Sport & PE Partnership
We are proud to work with the Warrington School Sport Partnership to broaden and enrich our PE and school sport offer. Through this collaboration, our pupils benefit from a wide range of sporting opportunities, festivals, and competitions that extend beyond the core curriculum. The partnership also gives access to specialist coaching, staff training, and shared expertise, helping us to continually raise the quality of PE and ensure lessons remain engaging and inclusive for all. By working together, we are able to inspire more children to be active, discover new sports, and develop the confidence and resilience that will stay with them for life.
Swimming
At St Elphin’s, we believe swimming is a vital life skill as well as an important part of the PE curriculum. Each year, we send a year group who will complete 10 sessions of swimming. You can see the school data for swimming on the Sports Premium document. We work in partnership with Warrington Swimming and LiveWire to provide high-quality swimming lessons that are safe, structured, and enjoyable. This partnership ensures our pupils are taught by experienced instructors, giving them the skills and confidence to swim, stay safe in the water, and develop a love for swimming as part of a healthy, active lifestyle.
The DfE (Department for Education) expectations for swimming are set out in the National Curriculum for PE (Key Stage 2). By the end of primary school (usually Year 6), all pupils should be able to:
-
Swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres.
-
Use a range of strokes effectively – for example, front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke.
-
Perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations.
