The Arts Team - Art & Design, Music & MFL

art2

We have combined the leadership of Art & Design, Music, and French into an ‘Arts Team’ to promote a shared vision that values creativity, cultural understanding, and expression. These subjects naturally complement one another, offering rich opportunities for cross-curricular learning and personal development. By working together, the team can plan experiences that deepen understanding, spark curiosity, and encourage a lifelong love of learning. The Arts Team helps ensure that all pupils access high-quality, enjoyable lessons that celebrate different forms of expression, support wellbeing, and build confidence. Through this joined-up approach, we aim to inspire creativity and unlock every child’s unique potential.

Meet the team

Mrs Beardsworth               Mrs Davies                        Mr Wood

Our Arts Team is made up of 3 teachers and 3 Arts Champions. The team meet at least once per half term to monitor how well their subjects are being taught but also to come up with new ideas, projects and special events to keep the subject exciting in school.

Music

At St Elphin's, we intend to provide high-quality music education which engages and inspires pupils to develop a love of music and their talent as musicians, increasing their self-confidence, creativity and sense of achievement. We believe that every child is a musician and has the right to develop their musical skills of singing, playing, improvising and composing as well as listening.

Music is a powerful way for children to express themselves and connect with others. Through shared musical experiences, we promote a strong sense of community, encouraging pupils to work together, support one another and celebrate each other’s achievements. We value and respect each child’s unique voice and musical journey.

Children have opportunities to perform their music as individuals, in small groups, and as whole classes, sharing their gifts in the spirit of service and love, both within school and in the wider community.

Music lessons are highly interactive are is taught weekly by our specialist music teacher Mr Wood.

Rhythm and melody are taught through the Kodaly approach where learning begins through songs, rhymes and games. In this way, each concept is PREPARED before it is presented carefully to the children after which it is practiced for a lifetime. This ensures that children understand the sound world of music They build up a number of concepts but most importantly they can hear everything.

Art & Design

We intend to provide a high quality Art education that gives children the skills and confidence to recognise the importance of art in every aspect of daily life. In our school, we want our children to appreciate how Art has changed the lives of human beings from the creation and designing of clothing and everyday objects as well as to appreciate the creation of physical art for decorative purposes too.

All children are taught about historic and contemporary artists as well as cultural crafts and art techniques. These techniques build on the following areas of art: drawing, painting, digital art, 3D sculpture, collage and textiles and the children are taught the fundamental areas of art and how to use materials safely and artistically in personal ways.  Our curriculum also encourages children to become independent learners, through researching, investigating and evaluating their artistic experiences.

Our children will:

  • Demonstrate a love for the Creative Arts and an interest in further study in this area.

  • Show a passion to explore the world around them in many different forms.

  • Be able to discuss the work and processes of other artists and craftspeople.

  • Be able to articulate their understanding of how certain art pieces make them feel

  • Demonstrate skills in many different areas such as drawing and painting.

  • Work independently to create sustained pieces of artwork which show skill and understanding of the techniques used.

Modern Foreign Languages - French

At St Elphin’s, our intent for teaching French is to foster a love of language learning while developing respect and understanding of other cultures. Through engaging and inclusive lessons, children broaden their English language awareness and deepen their communication skills. We promote kindness, care, and curiosity as pupils compare and contrast their own lives with those in French-speaking countries. Our approach nurtures confidence and enjoyment, supporting children to become thoughtful, respectful global citizens who value others and develop a lasting interest in languages and people.

French is taught weekly across Key Stage 2, using a structured and progressive approach. Teachers are supported by Warrington’s Languages Platform, which provides high-quality resources and planning. Lessons are interactive and engaging, with language learning embedded through games, songs, art, music, as well as reading and writing activities. This creative and varied approach helps pupils to practise and retain vocabulary, develop accurate pronunciation, and build confidence in using a new language in enjoyable and meaningful ways.
