The Humanities Team - History & Geography

geog1

Creating a Humanities Team that brings together the leadership of Geography and History enables us to build stronger, more meaningful connections across the curriculum. Many key themes—such as place, time, change, human impact, and civilisation—naturally cross into both subjects, and this joined-up approach allows pupils to explore these ideas in greater depth. Working as a team ensures greater consistency in planning, progression, and assessment, while also encouraging shared approaches to enquiry, fieldwork, and source analysis. Cross-curricular links can be identified more effectively, helping pupils make sense of the world by connecting past events with present-day places and issues.

This structure also supports pupils in retaining knowledge more securely, as learning is revisited and reinforced in different contexts. By combining subject leadership, we enrich learning experiences, develop pupils’ curiosity, and support them in becoming thoughtful, reflective learners who can make meaningful links between History, Geography, and the wider world.

Meet the team!

Our Humanities team is made up of 4 teachers and 3 Humanities Champions. The team meet at least once per half term to monitor how well their subjects are being taught but also to come up with new ideas, projects and special events to keep the subject exciting in school.

Geography

At St Elphin's CE VA Primary School, our intent is to deliver a geography curriculum that inspires pupils to develop a deep understanding of their local area and the wider world, preparing them to become thoughtful, informed members of both their community and the global community. Through engaging and ambitious learning opportunities, children are supported and challenged to ask questions, think critically, and make meaningful connections between people, places, and environments.

Rooted in our values of love, friendship, and service, our geography curriculum encourages pupils to appreciate the beauty and diversity of the Earth while understanding their responsibility to care for it. We promote global awareness, sustainability, and respect for all communities by exploring issues such as climate change, natural resources, and the impact of human activity.

We recognise the importance of nurturing spirituality through a sense of awe and wonder for the natural world, encouraging pupils to reflect on the richness of creation and their place within it.

Aligned with the National Curriculum, pupils develop knowledge of locations, place, scale, and environmental change, using maps, fieldwork, and enquiry-based learning to build geographical skills and vocabulary. Our intent is to nurture ambition, curiosity, and a strong sense of responsibility in every child, equipping them to explore, question, and serve the world around them—both now and in the future.

We follow the National Curriculum which is implemented through weekly lessons focused on building both skills and knowledge in a structured and progressive way. These lessons ensure pupils develop key geographical understanding, vocabulary, and enquiry skills over time. To deepen learning, we enhance this provision with topic extension lessons, where children apply and explore their knowledge in greater depth. Pupils are given opportunities to present their understanding in a range of ways, including written work, artwork, and multimedia presentations. This approach helps them consolidate learning while developing creativity, confidence, and communication skills alongside a deeper appreciation of the world around them.

History

Our History curriculum is intended to meet the aims of the National Curriculum by inspiring pupils’ curiosity to know more about the past. Through a focus on enquiry, pupils investigate key events, people, and changes over time, developing critical thinking and historical understanding. Lessons are carefully sequenced to offer challenge and support, ensuring all learners can access and engage with historical concepts.

We provide engaging learning opportunities that include discussion, debate, and hands-on exploration of sources and artefacts. Where possible, we make cross-curricular links to deepen understanding and make learning meaningful. Our intent is for pupils to gain a secure chronological framework, ask thoughtful questions, and develop the skills needed to think like historians.
